    O you who fatten yourself,

tell me, for whom do you grow fat?

You have fattened yourself for decay,

and grown potbellied, O you who fill your belly.

You have done every kind of wrong,

and thought that you were doing good.

Why do I see you feeling secure

in life and relying on it?

O dweller in chambers, there is no

dwelling for you but your grave.

    Today you vie for abundance,

    and boast and adorn yourself.

And tomorrow you will go to the graves,

    perfumed for burial and shrouded.

Turn to your Lord in repentance,

for its path is open to you.

And curb your desire for fear of Him,

in what you conceal and reveal.

For it will be as though you had never been

among people, the moment you are buried.

And as though your family had wept

in anguish over you and wailed.

Then, when a week has passed over you,

it is as though they had never grieved.

    People are in their heedlessness,

    and death's millstone grinds.

Against the circle of death, there is no

    fortress for anyone seeking refuge.
