    O wonder of the world to a wondering eye!

    And O bloom of the days—how it has changed!

    تَصَعَّدَتِ الأَيّامُ لي وَتَصَوَّبَت

    The days turn me about, again and anew;

    For me, the days have risen and fallen.

    فَلَم أَرَ أَيّامي مِنَ الرَوعِ أَعتَبَت

    And I reproached my days for how they terrify me;

    But I have not seen my days grant me relief from terror.

    تَخَرَّمَتِ الدُنيا الشَبابَ وَشَيَّبَت

    I shall announce to the people the death of youth now gone;

    The world has cut youth short and turned me gray.

    إِذا ما انقَضَت تَنفيسَةٌ لي تَقَرَّبَت

    And I have an end toward which my breathing runs;

    Whenever a breath of mine is spent, that end draws nearer.

    وَقَد حَنَّكَتني الحادِثاتُ وَجَرَّبَت

    And in every glance, examples are set before me;

    And misfortunes have seasoned me and put me to the test.

    إِلى أَيِّ دارٍ وَيحَ نَفسي تَطَرَّبَت

    My soul yearns for a base world;

    For what abode—alas for my soul!—has it yearned?

    And souls have been made to harbor greed, so each of them,

    when it intends to give generously, draws back.

    وَأَتعَبَتِ الدُنيا قُروناً وَأَنصَبَت

    Indeed, the world has deceived many generations;

    And the world has wearied generations and worn them out.

    It is the abode where death's camel-driver leads its people onward,

    as the day's sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

    لَها فِتَنٌ قَد فَضَّضَتها وَذَهَّبَت

    I have been afflicted by the world with a ghoul that changes its colors;

    It has temptations that have silvered and gilded it.

    And how astonishing are lifespans in their deceptions!

    And how astonishing are the means of sustenance—how they come about!

    يَفوزُ بِحُبِّ الناسِ نَفسٌ تَحَبَّبَت

    I have seen that the one people hate is the one who does not love them;

    A soul that endears itself wins people's love.
