O soul, departure has drawn near,

and the great calamity overshadows you.

So prepare yourself, O soul; do not

let far-reaching hope toy with you.

For you shall surely descend into an abode

    where friend forgets friend.

And in it there shall surely press upon you

    a heavy weight of earth.

Perishing is bound to us, so neither

the mighty nor the lowly shall remain.

Do not build up this world, for there is

no path to lasting life within it.

O companion of this world, is it because of this world

that you take pride and act haughtily?

Each one parts with his soul,

while a thirst for this world burns in his breast.

Before long, O brother of desires,

you will be their slain victim.

So when death demands your soul,

you will be one who cannot transfer the debt.

Then there you will have nothing

but your good and beautiful deeds.

Indeed, I seek protection for you, lest

desire sway you among those who stray.

And death is the final illness

    the ailing body suffers.

    In warding off death's calamity,

    sound judgment finds itself hard-pressed.

For often the noble steed has stumbled,

and often the guide has lost his way.

And many a generation has passed,

    followed by generation after generation.

And many a woman weeping over me

will be of little avail to me.
