    فَيَسِّروا الأَكفانَ مِن عاجِلِ

    O my brothers, passion will kill me;

So make the shrouds ready at once.

And do not blame me for following passion,

For I am taken up with an all-consuming concern.

    My eye overflows for Utbah

    With its spilling, streaming tears.

Oh, who before me has seen a slain man weep

From the intensity of longing, over his killer?

I held out my palm toward you, begging:

What do you offer the beggar in reply?

If you give him nothing, then say to him

A kind word in place of a gift.

Or if this year you are too hard-pressed

To give it, then hold out hope to him until next year.

In her beauty she is like a pearl

That the sea has cast upon the shore.

It is as though in her mouth and in her gaze

Were sorceresses who had come from Babylon.

My love for her has left nothing of me but

A last spark of life in a wasted body.
