O dwellers of the graves, peace be upon you from me.

I speak to you, but you have no speech.

Do not think that your loved ones could no longer enjoy

Drink or food after you were gone.

No! They have cast you aside and taken others

In your place; death has severed the bond between you.

And all mankind is thus; so everyone who

Has died has no claim upon the living.

I questioned the tombs of kings, and they told

Me that within them the kings are limbs and skulls.

Nothing remains of those bodies of theirs that

Were nourished in the most luxurious life, save bones.

God! What men the dust has hidden—

They were the noble ones whenever the noble were named.

God! What men the dust has hidden—

They lived with their neighbor secure, never wronged.

    كَ وَلِلفَناءِ وَلِلبَلى خُلِقَ الأَنام

    He who never ceases to destroy kings has destroyed them;

And mankind was created to perish and decay.

O my two companions, I have forgotten my abiding home,

And built up a house that is no lasting home for me.

A house whose inhabitants Time intends to send away,

And they seem asleep to what is intended for them.

Never have I tasted a pleasure in it without

Misfortunes refusing to let it last.
