رُبَّmany a باكٍweeper لِلمَوتِover death يُبكىthere is weeping عَلَيهِover him
رُبَّ باكٍ لِلمَوتِ يُبكى عَلَيهِ
قَدalready حَوىhas gathered مالَهُhis wealth بِكِلتاwith both يَدَيهِhis hands
قَد حَوى مالَهُ بِكِلتا يَدَيهِ
Many a man who weeps over death is himself wept over,
Many weep for death while mourners weep o’er them;
having gathered his wealth in both his hands.
Their hoarded wealth is held in both their hands.
إِنَّماonly هَمُّconcern وارِثيmy heir بَعدَafter مَوتيmy death
إِنَّما هَمُّ وارِثي بَعدَ مَوتي
ماwhat أُخَلّيI leave behind لاnot ماwhat أَصيرُI shall come إِلَيهِto it
ما أُخَلّي لا ما أَصيرُ إِلَيهِ
My heir's only concern after my death
My heirs alone concern me after death-
is what I leave behind, not what I shall come to.
Not what I leave, but what to them descends.
