Lo, time's vicissitudes bring near and drive away,

And grant the comfort of companions for a time, then take them away.

Through time's vicissitudes, one hand of mine struck the other.

So I submitted to fate, and I praise God.

And I said to time's vicissitudes: if one hand has perished,

A hand still remains to me—praise be to God.

If al-Ma'mum remains to me, then al-Rashid is mine,

And I have Ja'far and Muhammad: neither has been lost.
