Let whoever would weep weep for God's Messenger.

And do not forget a grave that lies in Medina.

May God reward Muhammad with every good on our behalf.

For he was rightly guided, a guide and a giver of guidance.

And remembrance will not spread as he deserves,

    if you forget purifying righteousness.

Do you forget God's Messenger, the best of those who walked,

while his traces in the two mosques remain unchanged?

And he was the kindest of people toward all people,

and the noblest of them in house, ravine, and valley.

After the Prophet Muhammad, there grew turbid—

God's peace be upon him—what once was clear.

So how many beacons he had made clear to us,

and how many landmarks now lie effaced, evening and morning!

We leaned toward the base world after him,

and greed laid bare the faults within us.

    نَراها فَما تَزدَدُ إِلّا تَمادِيا

    And we are surely struck each day by a lesson;

we see it, yet you only persist further in error.

We rejoice in an abode that has bequeathed us mutual rancor

over it, and in an abode that has bequeathed us mutual enmity.

If a man does not wear garments of piety,

he goes about naked, even if clothed.

My brother, place no hope in people, all of them,

without exception; and hope in God as long as you live.

Have you not seen that God suffices His servants?

So God is sufficient for God's servants.

And how many ills! What difference does it make whether you suffer them

from people one day, or touch vipers?

My brother, my stinginess and yours have kept us from being seen

giving aid to anyone in need, whether you or I.

Each of us is potbellied, his sides visibly clothed,

yet among the people are those who go hungry evening and morning.

As though we were created to last forever—and which of us,

even if life in this world is prolonged for him, is not mortal?

Death insists that it shall meet whoever dwells

among all creation, wherever he may be.

You have cut off hopes, O Death, with an agonizing cut.

And, O Death, you gave the weeping women repeated draughts of weeping.

And you have torn us utterly apart, O Death,

and you have shown us, O Death, the calamities you bring.

Ah, you long heedless one, you have become heedless,

and you have become deluded, and you cling on.

Do we encounter a funeral every day,

and every day hear someone announcing a death,

and every day, because of you, pity a wailer,

and every day join a weeper in mourning?

Ah, you who build beyond what suffices you,

ah, you have become a builder of what time will ruin.

Ah, you have become a hoarder, only for life to pass away,

and you have become conceited, boastful, and vainglorious.

As though you had turned away from all you see,

and left those you left behind forgetful of you.
