إِنّيindeed, I سَأَلتُI asked القَبرَthe grave ماwhat فَعَلَتdid
بَعديafter me وُجوهٌfaces فيكَin you مُنعَفِرَهdust-covered
Indeed, I asked the grave, 'What has become
Of faces lying dust-covered within you in my absence?'
فَأَجابَنيso it answered me صَيَّرتُI made ريحَهُمُtheir smell
تُؤذيكَoffends you بَعدَafter رَوائِحٍscents عَطِرَهfragrant
So it answered me: 'I have made their smell
Offend you, though once their scents were fragrant.
وَأَكَلتُand I devoured أَجساداًbodies مُنَعَّمَةًpampered
كانَwas النَعيمُluxury يَهُزُّهاswaying them نَضِرَهfresh and radiant
And I devoured pampered bodies
That luxury once swayed, fresh and radiant.
لَمdid not أُبقِI leave behind غَيرَother than جَماجِمٍskulls عَرِيَتwere stripped bare
بيضٍwhite تَلوحُgleaming وَأَعظُمٍand bones نَخِرَهdecayed
I left nothing but skulls stripped bare,
White and gleaming, and decayed bones.'
