سَهَوتُ وَغَرَّني أَمَلي

سَهَوتُ وَغَرَّني أَمَلي

وَقَد قَصَّرتُ في عَمَلي

وَقَد قَصَّرتُ في عَمَلي

I was heedless, and my hope deceived me.

I was deluded by my hopes,

And I have indeed fallen short in my deeds.

And I was neglectful in my deeds,

وَمَنزِلَةٍ خُلِقتُ لَها

وَمَنزِلَةٍ خُلِقتُ لَها

جَعَلتُ بِغَيرِها شُغُلي

جَعَلتُ بِغَيرِها شُغُلي

And an abode for which I was created—

I was created for a high position,

I have made something other than it my preoccupation.

Yet I busied myself with other things,

أَرى الأَيّامَ مُسرِعَةً

أَرى الأَيّامَ مُسرِعَةً

تُقَرِّبُني إِلى أَجَلي

تُقَرِّبُني إِلى أَجَلي

I see the days hastening,

I see the days speeding by,

Bringing me closer to my appointed end.
