بَلَوتُI tested إِخاءَfriendship الناسِthe people ياO عَمرُAmr كُلِّهِمall of them
بَلَوتُ إِخاءَ الناسِ يا عَمرُ كُلِّهِم
وَجَرَّبتُand I tried حَتّىuntil أَحكَمَتنيmade me wise تَجارِبيmy experiences
وَجَرَّبتُ حَتّى أَحكَمَتني تَجارِبي
I tested the friendship of all people, O Amr,
I have tested people's brotherhood, O my life, all of them
And tried them until my experiences made me wise.
And I have tried until my experiences have taught me
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see وُدَّaffection الناسِthe people إِلّاexcept رِضاهُمُtheir approval
فَلَم أَرَ وُدَّ الناسِ إِلّا رِضاهُمُ
فَمَنso whoever يُزرِfinds fault أَوor يَغضَبgrows angry فَلَيسَthen is not بِصاحِبِa friend
فَمَن يُزرِ أَو يَغضَب فَلَيسَ بِصاحِبِ
I found people's affection to be nothing but their approval;
So I did not see people's affection except through their satisfaction
So whoever finds fault or grows angry is no friend.
Whoever dislikes or gets angry is not a friend
