I shall surely weep for myself, and rightly so.

O eye, do not withhold my tears from me.

I shall surely weep for the loss of youth, and already

gray hair has called for my departure from the world.

I shall surely weep for myself, and be joined in mourning by

a sleepless eye that weeps at my parting.

I shall surely weep for myself, and be joined in mourning by

my family and those of my loved ones who were around me.

I shall surely weep, and those I trust will weep for me,

until death—my close friends and my brothers.

I shall surely weep, for urgent now is the journey to

the house of my severance from the world and my solitude.

O house, house of death, O house of my isolation!

O house, house of death, O house of my exile!

O house, house of separation from everyone I trust!

O house, house of death, O house of my desolation!

O remoteness of my destination, O terror of what awaits me!

O narrowness of my resting place, O distance of my journey!

O eye, how many clear lessons there are for me,

if I am ever to profit from my lesson!

    أَمّا الزَمانُ فَقَد أَودى بِجِدَّتِيَه

    O eye, then stream if you wish, or else refrain;

as for time, it has already done away with my freshness.

O my anguish on the day when no neighbor shows kindness, nor

any protector relieves my anguish, save God—

a day when I turn my gaze, staring fixedly,

while my stupor makes me reel in the pools of death,

when the anguish of dying takes shape before me, and I have

turned my gaze and swallowed back the lump in my throat.
