أَسعِدانيhelp me, both of you بِالدَمعِwith tears ياO عَينَيّاmy two eyes
أَسعِدانيhelp me, both of you عَلَيهِin it ماas long as دُمتُI remain حَيّاalive
Help me with tears, O my two eyes.
My eyes have brought me joy with tears,
Help me in this as long as I live.
As long as I live, may they make me happy with them.
أَنَI أَولىmore entitled بِماto what بَكَيتُI have wept عَلىover نَفmyself (first fragment)
سيmyself (final fragment) مِنَthan الباكِياتِthe women who weep يَوماًone day عَلَيّاover me
I have more right to weep over my own—
I who wept for my soul, am more deserving
self than the women who will one day weep over me.
Than those who will one day weep for me.
نَفَسٌa breath ليof mine قَدِalready اِنقَضىhas passed ثُمَّthen طَرفيmy glance
وَهُماand they both يَنعَيانِannounce the death of نَفسيmyself إِلَيّاto me
A breath of mine has passed, then my glance;
A soul I had is now gone, while my eyes
And both announce my own death to me.
Mourn my soul, appealing to me.
يُشِكُis about to الطَرفُthe gaze وَالتَنَفُسُّand breathing أَلّاnot to
يَترُكاboth leave ليfor me مِنَof التَحَرُّكِmovement شَيّاanything
Soon my gaze and breathing will not
My breathing and my tears almost
leave me any movement at all.
Leave me no strength remaining to move.
وَمِنَand among الحَزمِprudence أَنthat أَكونَI be لِنَفسيfor myself
قَبلَbefore مَوتيmy death فيماover what مَلَكتُI own وَصِيّاan executor
And it is prudent that I should act for myself,
And prudent it is, before my death,
before my death, as executor of what I own.
To be executor of what I own.
عَجَباًwhat a wonder! ماhow عَجِبتُI have marveled مِنat شُحِّmiserliness of نَفسيmy soul
صَيَّرَتنيit has made me مِلكاًa possession لِمِلكِbelonging to the property of يَدَيّاmy two hands
How greatly I marvel at my soul's miserliness!
How strange that my own soul's stinginess
It has made me a possession of what my two hands possess.
Has made me slave to what my hands possess.
