    Heal with gentleness the wounds of rashness.

    And test before praising or blaming, and taste.

    And embrace people with a gracious disposition.

    Nothing is too difficult for good character.

    Whoever’s character is not accommodating—

    Kindness is distant from him, far removed.

    How long, my brother, do you think we shall remain amid

    Death’s roaming across this horizon?

    نَتَوالى عُنُقاً بَعدَ عُنُق

    We are successive bands bound for the abode of decay;

    We follow one another, band after band.
