Have you not seen that the days deal blows,

And that their blows bring maiming and mutilation,

And that calamities, when they come in succession,

Drag with force and hurl you to the ground?

Do you not know, O our brother, that you

Were formed with decay and decline in your very nature,

And that the steps of time never cease,

And that whatever they sustain must be cut short?

When time turns, it brings glory low,

And wears out the new and annihilates a multitude.

I see you fending off the days, one day

Then another, with hopes, push after push.

My dear brother, when the ever-new pair—day and night—revolves,

Their two hands show you reaping and sowing.

When time charges with its two horns,

Then its charge brings both lowering and raising.

And you will never have room for generosity,

If you find fairness beyond your capacity.

If a man does not benefit you while alive,

Then, were he dead, he would be less useful still.
