أَغَرَّكَhas it misled you? أَنّيthat I صِرتُI became فيin زِيِّthe garb of مِسكينِa poor man
وَصِرتَand you began إِذِwhen استَغنَيتَyou had no need عَنّيof me تُنَحّينيyou push me aside
Has it misled you that I have come to wear a poor man's garb?
Did it make you arrogant that I became dressed in the garb of a pauper
And when you no longer needed me, you began to push me aside.
While you, when you became self-sufficient, pushed me away?
تَباعَدتُI withdrew إِذwhen باعَدتَنيyou drove me away وَاطَّرَحتَنيand cast me aside
وَكُنتُand I was قَريبَnear الدارِin dwelling إِذwhen كُنتَyou were تَبغينيseeking me
I withdrew when you drove me away and cast me aside,
I retreated when you distanced me, and you discarded me,
and my home was near when you used to seek me.
Yet I had been a neighbor when you wanted me.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are لاnot تَصفوsincere صَبَرتُI endured عَلىwith القَذىthe grit
وَغَمَّضتُand I closed عَينيmy eye مِنagainst قَذاكَyour grit إِلىfor حينِa time
So if you are not sincere, I have borne the grit,
So if you are not just, I have patience for grit,
and closed my eye against your grit for a time.
And I closed my eyes to your hurt for a time.
وَحَسَّنتُand I praised أَوor قَبَّحتُI censured كَيماso that تَلينَyou might soften ليtoward me
فَحَسَّنتَthen you praised تَقبيحيmy censure وَقَبَّحتَand you censured تَحسينيmy praise
And I praised or censured, so that you might soften toward me;
I made good or evil however you might yield to me,
yet you praised my censure and censured my praise.
Yet you made my evil good and my good evil.
رَضيتُI am content بِإِقلاليwith my scant means فَعِشso live أَنتَyou موسِراًwealthy
فَإِنَّfor indeed قَليليmy little عَنwithout needing كَثيرَكَyour abundance يَكفينيsuffices me
I am content with my scant means; live in affluence yourself,
I was content with my poverty: you live wealthy!
for my little suffices me without your abundance.
For my little suffices me from your abundance.
وَبَعدُand furthermore فَلاso let not يَذهَبcarry away بِكَwith you التيهُarrogance فيin الغِنىwealth
لَعَلَّperhaps الَّذيthe One who أَغناكَmade you independent عَنّيof me سَيُغنينيwill enrich me
And furthermore, do not let pride in wealth carry you away;
And after, do not be led astray by wealth,
perhaps He who made you independent of me will enrich me.
Perhaps He who enriched you beyond me will enrich me.
وَماand not العِزُّhonor إِلّاexcept عِزُّthe honor of مَنone who عَزَّgained honor بِالتُقىthrough piety
وَماand not الفَضلُmerit إِلّاexcept فَضلُthe merit of ذيone possessing الفَضلِvirtue وَالدينِand faith
And there is no honor but the honor of one exalted by piety,
True honor is only the honor of one honored through piety,
and there is no merit but the merit of one with virtue and faith.
True merit is only the merit of one meriting through religion.
وَفيand in اللَهِGod ماwhat أَغنىenriches وَفيand in اللَهِGod ماwhat كَفىsuffices
وَفيand in الصَبرِpatience عَمّاover what فاتَنيhas passed me by ماwhat يُسَلّينيconsoles me
And in God is what enriches, and in God is what suffices;
In God is that which enriches; in God is that which suffices.
and in patience over what has passed me by is what consoles me.
In patience over what eluded me is that which consoles me.
وَعِنديand I have مِنَfrom التَسليمِsubmission لِلَّهِto God وَالرِضىand contentment
إِذاwhen عَرَضَbefalls المَكروهُadversity ليme ماwhat يُعَزّينيcomforts me
And I have, in submission to God and contentment,
In my resignation to God and acceptance,
when adversity befalls me, that which comforts me.
When misfortune befalls me, is that which cheers me.
وَحَسبيand that suffices me فَإِنّيfor indeed I لاnot أُريدُI wish لِصاحِبٍfor a friend
قَبيحاًanything evil وَلاand not أُعنىI concern myself بِماwith what لَيسَdoes not يَعنينيconcern me
And that is enough for me, for I wish no friend
It suffices me, for I do not want for a companion
anything evil, nor concern myself with what does not concern me.
Anything ugly, nor care for what does not concern me.
وَإِنّيand indeed I أَرىI hold أَنthat لاnot أُنافِسَI vie with ظالِماًa wrongdoer
وَأُرضيand I please بِكُلِّwith all الحَقِّrightful due مَنone who لَيسَdoes not يُرضينيplease me
And I hold that I should not vie with a wrongdoer,
I see that I should not vie with an unjust person,
and I please, by giving him his full due, one who does not please me.
And I am pleased with all truth from one who does not please me.
