Greed never enslaves one with good breeding.

A man's zeal in greed is a marvel.

What a mind the greedy man has! How can he have

a longing for everything he cannot attain?

The greedy man's greed keeps feeding him,

as he seeks a thing with ruin barring the way.

The greedy man's life has never been pleasant, nor

have misery and toil parted from him.

Oppression, greed, and passion are trials

from which neither non-Arabs nor Arabs have escaped.

    No man, in his contentment,

if it is genuine, suffers harm or toil.

If one is not content with enough to live on,

the whole earth, were it gold, would not suffice him.

If one lets doubt gain hold of his resolve,

his judgment never ceases to waver.

Whoever knows the ways of time remains wary,

guarding against its hardships and keeping watch.

    تُغرِقُهُ في بُحورِها الكُرَبُ

    Whoever clings to rancor is ever grief-stricken;

sorrows drown him in their seas.

A man feels at home in an abode

that kills its inhabitants and robs them.

And man is absorbed in his amusement and vain pursuits,

while death, throughout all that, draws near.

O you who fear death, you do not fear it,

and, by God, conceit and play are yours.

    قَصرُكَ تُبلي جَديدَةَ الحِقَبُ

    Your house announces its inhabitant's death to you;

your palace—the ages wear away its freshness.

O lifelong gatherer of wealth, tomorrow

plunder will sweep away what you have amassed.

Beware of trusting time, for never

has time ceased to turn against us.

Beware of injustice: it is darkness.

Beware of suspicion: it is falsehood.

Even as you see the people in their dwelling,

suddenly it is said: 'They have perished, decayed, and gone.'

O builder of the palace, O you who raise it high,

your palace—the ages wear away its freshness.

Indeed, I have seen the noble man acknowledge

and patiently fulfill obligations when they fall due.

And I have known the base: they have no

    loyalty, friendship, or honor.

Guard yourself against the base, for they

do not care what wrongs they commit against you.

For half the character of the base, since they were created,

is servile bearing, and the other half is strife.

Flee from baseness and the base, and do not

draw near them, for they are scabies.
