ذَهَبَwent off الحِرصُgreed بِأَصحابِwith the travelers of الدُلَجnight journeys
ذَهَبَ الحِرصُ بِأَصحابِ الدُلَج
فَهُمُso they فيin غَمرَةٍan engulfing flood ذاتِhaving لُجَجdeep waters
فَهُمُ في غَمرَةٍ ذاتِ لُجَج
Greed has carried away the lords of fortune,
Greed has carried off the travelers by night;
and they are plunged in fathomless depths.
so they are in a flood of deep waters.
لَيسَnot كُلُّall الخَيرِgood يَأتيcomes عاجِلاًswiftly
لَيسَ كُلُّ الخَيرِ يَأتي عاجِلاً
إِنَّماonly الخَيرُgood حُظوظٌallotted shares وَدَرَجand degrees
إِنَّما الخَيرُ حُظوظٌ وَدَرَج
Not every good comes swiftly;
Not all good comes at once;
good is granted in shares and degrees.
good comes only in allotted shares and degrees.
لاnot يَزالُceases المَرءُa person ماas long as عاشَhe lives لَهُfor him
لا يَزالُ المَرءُ ما عاشَ لَهُ
حاجَةٌa need فيin الصَدرِthe breast دَأباًceaselessly تَعتَلِجstirs
حاجَةٌ في الصَدرِ دَأباً تَعتَلِج
As long as one lives, there will always remain
As long as a person lives, he always has
a need within the breast, forever stirring.
a need ceaselessly stirring in his breast.
رُبَّmany a أَمرٍmatter قَدindeed تَضايَقتَyou felt distressed بِهِby it
رُبَّ أَمرٍ قَد تَضايَقتَ بِهِ
ثُمَّthen يَأتيcomes اللَهُGod مِنهُfrom it بِالفَرَجwith relief
ثُمَّ يَأتي اللَهُ مِنهُ بِالفَرَج
Many a matter has hemmed you in—
Many a matter has left you distressed,
then God brings deliverance out of it.
then God brings relief from it.
