وَقَدand may يَعفوpardon الكَريمُthe noble person إِذاwhen اِستَراباhe is suspicious
Greed and covetousness have bowed necks.
Greed and desire humble mankind,
And the noble may pardon when in doubt.
Yet the generous may pardon when offended.
إِذاwhen اِتَّضَحَbecomes clear الصَوابُwhat is right فَلاthen do not تَدَعهُabandon it
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you كُلَّماwhenever ذُقتَyou taste الصَواباwhat is right
When the right course becomes clear, do not abandon it;
When truth is clear, do not let it go -
For whenever you taste what is right,
For whenever you taste truth,

You find its coolness upon the palate,
You find it cooler than frivolity,
Like the coolness of water when clear and pleasant.
Like cool water when it is pure and fresh.
وَلَيسَand is not بِحاكِمٍa judge مَنone who لاnot يُباليcares

And he is no judge who does not care
One who does not care whether he rules justly or not
Whether he erred in judgment or was right.
Cannot be called a judge.
وَإِنَّand indeed لِكُلِّfor every تَلخيصٍclarification لَوَجهاًindeed an approach

And every clarification surely has its approach,
Every summary has a purpose,
And every question has an answer.
Every issue has an answer,
وَإِنَّand indeed لِكُلِّfor every حادِثَةٍevent لَوَقتاًindeed a time

Every event has its time,
And everyone who acts has a reckoning.
And every worker will be judged.

And every vantage point surely has a limit,
Whoever aspires has a limit,
And everyone who acts has a reckoning.
And every worker will be judged.

And all well-being promises death,
All safety predicts doom,
And every building promises ruin.
And all building predicts ruin.

And every crowned ruler will one day come,
Every ruler will one day
Together with what his hands possessed, to utter ruin.
Possess only what his hands can hold together.

The blinks of every contented eye refuse
The eyes of every seer refuse
In this world all but turmoil and reversal.
To see in this world anything but chaos and change,
كَأَنَّas though مَحاسِنَthe beauties of الدُنياthe world سَرابٌa mirage

As though the beauties of this world were a mirage;
As if the beauties of this world were a mirage,
And what hand has ever grasped a mirage?
And what hand can grasp a mirage?
وَإِنand if تَكُthere is مُنيَةٌa wish عَجِلَتhas hastened بِشَيءٍwith something

And if a wish has hastened to bring something
If death takes something prematurely,
That delights you, it will surely pass away.
You rejoice in it, yet it will depart.
فَياso O عَجَباًa marvel تَموتُyou die وَأَنتَwhile you تَبنيbuild

وَتَتَّخِذُand you erect المَصانِعَstrongholds وَالقِباباand domes
So, what a marvel! You die while you build,
How strange to die while you build,
And erect strongholds and domes.
And make structures and palaces!
أَراكَI see you وَكُلَّماand whenever أَغلَقتَyou close باباًa door

I see you—and whenever you close a door
I see that whenever you close one door
Of this world, you open another upon yourself.
To the world, you open another.

Have you not seen that each day's morning
Do you not see that each new day
Brings you nearer to your death?
Brings you closer to your death?

And it is fitting for one sure of death not
One who knows he will die
To find food or drink easy to swallow.
Should not relish food or drink.

A mighty King governs what we see;
A mighty king arranges what we see,
His happenings testify to Him, though He is unseen.
Though events have witnessed his coming and going.
أَلَيسَis not اللَهُGod مِنto كُلِّall قَريباًnear

Is God not near to all?
Is not God always near,
Yes—wherever He is called, He answers.
Ready to answer when called?

And you have never seen a supplicant to God go empty-handed,
Have you not seen one who prays to God disappointed,
Nor have you seen one hoping in God disappointed.
Or one who hopes in God betrayed?
رَأَيتُI saw الروحَrepose جَدبَbarrenness of العَيشِlivelihood لَمّاwhen

I found ease in a life of want, when
I saw the spirit grow barren of life
I came to know life as churning and milking.
When I knew life was labor and trial.
وَلَستَand you are not بِغالِبِovercoming الشَهَواتِdesires حَتّىuntil

And you will not overcome desires until
You cannot defeat desire
You prepare for them patience and hope of reward.
Until you prepare for it patience and acceptance.
فَكُلُّso every مُصيبَةٍcalamity عَظُمَتbecame great وَجَلَّتand became grave

For every calamity, however great and grave,
Every great and feared calamity
Grows lighter when you hope for its reward.
Grows small when you hope for reward.
كَبِرناwe grew old أَيُّهاO الأَترابُpeers حَتّىuntil

We have grown old, O peers, until
We have grown old, my friends,
It is as though we were never once young.
Though once we were youths.
وَكُنّاand we were كَالغُصونِlike branches إِذاwhen تَثَنَّتthey bent

And we were like branches when they swayed,
We were like bending branches,
Of sweet basil, lovely and fresh.
Scented blossoms, in the meadow.

How long will our youthful infatuation with an abode endure,
How long did our childhood last
Whose seizure and plunder I have witnessed?
In a home where I saw only plunder and piracy?
أَلاah ماwhat لِلكُهولِfor middle-aged men وَلِلتَصابيand for acting young

إِذاwhen ماindeed اِغتَرَّis deceived مُكتَهِلُa middle-aged man تَصابىacts young
Ah, what have middle-aged men to do with playing young?
What can an old man or graybeard do
When a middle-aged man is deceived, he acts young.
When a mature graybeard behaves like a youth?
فَزِعتُI sought refuge إِلىin خِضابِdyeing الشَيبِgray hair مِنهُfrom it

وَإِنَّand indeed نُصولَهُits fading فَضَحَexposed الخِضاباthe dye
I took refuge from it in dyeing my gray hair;
I fled to dyeing the gray hair
Yet its fading has exposed the dye.
For his recklessness exposed the dye!
مَضىdeparted عَنّيfrom me الشَبابُyouth بِغَيرِwithout وُدّيmy wish

Youth left me against my will,
My youth left me without farewell -
So I seek God's reward for the loss of youth.
But in God I seek recompense for my youth.
وَماand there is not مِنany غايَةٍend إِلّاexcept المَناياdeaths

And there is no final end but death
There is no fate but death
For one whose youth has worn away and who has grown gray.
For one whose youth and vigor are spent.
وَماand not مِنكَof you الشَبابُyouth وَلَستَand you are not مِنهُof it

And youth is no part of you, nor are you part of it,
You cannot regain your youth when
When your beard asks you for dye.
Your beard asks you for dye.
