Go to the graves and call to them aloud.

And if they answer, then question the dead:

Where are the kings, the sons of kings? For all of them

have become, evening and morning, crumbled remains in the dust.

How many a father and father's father of yours lies among

the layers of earth—of whom it was said, 'He lived, then died.'

And time is a day you are in, and another

you hope for, or a day gone by and lost to you.

    هَيهاتَ مِمّا تَرتَجي هَيهاتا

    Far beyond reach! You are indeed hoping for immortality;

far are you from what you hope for—far indeed!

How swiftly comes the event that is to be—

there is no escaping it—and how near the appointed time!
