سُبحانَ عَلّامِ الغُيوبِ
عَجَباًhow wondrous لِتَصريفِat the changing course of الخُطوبِcalamities
عَجَباً لِتَصريفِ الخُطوبِ
Glory be to the Knower of all hidden things.
Glory be to the All-Knower of the unseen!
How wondrous are the workings of calamities!
How wondrous the changing course of calamities!
تَعروassail فُروعَthe branches of الآمِنيـthe secure (word continues)
تَعرو فُروعَ الآمِنيـ
ـنَcompletes 'the secure' وَتَجتَنيand pluck ثَمَرَthe fruit of القُلوبِhearts
ـنَ وَتَجتَني ثَمَرَ القُلوبِ
They assail the branches of those who feel secure,
They assail the branches of the secure
and pluck the fruit of hearts.
And pluck the fruit of hearts.
حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen ياO نَفسُsoul تَغbegins 'you are deceived'
حَتّى مَتى يا نَفسُ تَغ
تَرّينَcompletes 'you are deceived' بِالأَمَلِby hope الكَذوبِfalse
تَرّينَ بِالأَمَلِ الكَذوبِ
How long, O soul, will you let
How long, O soul, will you
false hope deceive you?
Be deceived by false hope?
ياO نَفسُsoul توبيrepent قَبلَbefore أَنthat
يا نَفسُ توبي قَبلَ أَن
لاnot تَستَطيعيyou are able أَنto تَتوبيyou repent
لا تَستَطيعي أَن تَتوبي
O soul, repent before
O soul, repent before
you can no longer repent.
You can no longer repent.
وَاستَغفِريand seek forgiveness لِذُنوبِكِfor your sins الرَbegins 'the Most Merciful'
وَاستَغفِري لِذُنوبِكِ الرَ
حمَنَcompletes 'the Most Merciful' غَفّارَthe great Forgiver of الذُنوبِsins
حمَنَ غَفّارَ الذُنوبِ
And for your sins, seek forgiveness from
And seek forgiveness for your sins from the
the All-Merciful, the great Forgiver of sins.
Most Merciful, the great Forgiver of sins.
أَمّاas for الحَوادِثُmisfortunes فَالرِياthen the winds (word continues)
أَمّا الحَوادِثُ فَالرِيا
حُcompletes 'the winds' بِهِنَّwith them دائِمَةُconstant الهُبوبِblowing
حُ بِهِنَّ دائِمَةُ الهُبوبِ
As for calamities, their
As for misfortunes, the winds
winds are forever blowing.
Are forever blowing with them.
وَالمَوتُand death خَلقٌa created thing واحِدٌone
وَالمَوتُ خَلقٌ واحِدٌ
وَالخَلقُand created beings مُختَلِفُdiffering in الضُروبِkinds
وَالخَلقُ مُختَلِفُ الضُروبِ
Death is a single created thing,
And death is a single creation,
while created beings are of differing kinds.
While created beings are of diverse kinds.
وَالسَعيُand striving فيin طَلَبِpursuit of التُقىpiety
وَالسَعيُ في طَلَبِ التُقى
مِنamong خَيرِthe best مُكتَسَبِwhat is acquired by الكَسوبِthe diligent earner
مِن خَيرِ مُكتَسَبِ الكَسوبِ
And striving in pursuit of piety
And striving in pursuit of piety
is among the finest gains an earner may earn.
Is among the best gains of the diligent earner.
وَلَقَلَّand indeed seldom ماparticle completing 'seldom' يَنجوescapes الفَتىthe young man الـthe
وَلَقَلَّ ما يَنجو الفَتى الـ
ـمَحمودُpraised مِنfrom لَطخِthe stain of العُيوبِfaults
ـمَحمودُ مِن لَطخِ العُيوبِ
And seldom does the young man—the
And seldom indeed does the young man escape—
praiseworthy one—escape the stain of faults.
The praised one—from the stain of faults.
