For some purpose you were created—why this delusion?

For some purpose the months are driven onward with you.

Do you not see calamities visit at evening,

bringing you their reversals, and visit at dawn?

Do you know what will befall you in the nights,

while your headstrong mount is prone to stumble with you?

It is as though you do not see in every direction

the millstone of time's calamities, turning round and round.

Will you not visit the graves one morning,

and hear what the graves tell you?

For their stillness is motion that whispers,

as though the depths of what they hide lay exposed.

Ah, what a sleep is yours after a cup

whose drinker faces decay and resurrection!

By your life, none attains excellence except

one God-fearing at heart, seeking God's reward and patient.

My dear brother, do you not see your world as an abode

surging with its inhabitants, with seas of its own?

So do not forget composure when an event unsettles the

mind, making even the composed lose balance.

And many a man stirs strife against you while keeping still,

as though his tongue were a mauling beast of prey.

    تَضايَقُ عَن وَساوِسِهِ الصُدورُ

    People's malice creeps among them;

breasts grow too narrow for its whisperings.

I pray you be kept from delighting in life in an abode

    where joy so seldom lasts.

In an abode where, before its inhabitants,

the veils are ceaselessly torn from its disgraces.

Behold, there is light upon certainty,

and there is no light upon doubt.

And indeed, none but God remains,

and if you are a sinner, He is the All-Forgiving.

And how many a mighty king have you beheld,

whose kin forsook him though they were present!

And how many a mighty plunderer have you beheld,

the curtains of seclusion falling away from his wives,

and cheeks bloodied by slaps in mourning for him,

    and wrists and throats bound!

Have you not seen that this world is mere debris,

and that all within it is delusion?
