Enough! Restrain yourself, my dear brother, enough!

You wear away, yet you have grown arrogant.

    And many a devastating utterance

an ear has caught and kept in mind.

And surely from the forbearing man will depart

forbearance, if he disputes with the fool.

Stay safe—may you be guided—and, concerning your own

self, be knowledgeable, skilled, and discerning.

And if you envy for their piety

a people, then be like them.

How many a desire that corrupts your

faith have I seen you crave!

O you who sell the world for itself,

at one time, and at another buy it!

As for this world's millstone, it is

    turning, revolving upon its children.

And perhaps one who casts a glance

will die in another that follows it.

If you are certain there is an abode

other than the abode you inhabit,

    where joy endures, and

    honors remain for its inhabitants,

then labor for it, girded for action,

if you are among those who seek it.

There is no good in this world for one

deluded by it, who does not guard against it.
