أَبلِغconvey سَلِمتَmay you be safe أَباAbu (father of) الوَليدِal-Walid سَلاميmy greetings
عَنّيon my behalf أَميرَCommander المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful إِماميmy imam
Convey—may you be safe—my greetings to Abu al-Walid,
from me, to the Commander of the Faithful, my imam.
وَإِذاand when فَرَغتَyou have finished مِنَwith السَلامِthe greeting فَقُلthen say لَهُto him
قَدindeed كانَhappened ماwhat شاهَدتَyou witnessed مِنof إِفحاميmy being silenced
And when you have finished the greeting, say to him:
I was indeed struck speechless, as you witnessed.
وَإِذاand if حَصِرتُI was tongue-tied فَلَيسَthen is not ذاكَthat بِمُبطِلٍinvalidating
ماwhat قَدalready مَضىhas passed مِنof حُرمَتيmy honored standing وَذِماميand my claim to protection
And if I was tongue-tied, that does not annul
the respect and protection previously accorded me.
وَلَطالَماand many a time وَفَدَتcame as visitors إِلَيكَto you مَدائِحيmy poems of praise
مَحظوظَةًfavored فَلَيَأتِso let come كُلُّall مَلامِreproach
And often my poems of praise have visited you,
favored—so let all reproach come—
أَيّامَin the days when ليI had لَسَنٌeloquence وَرِقَّةُand tenderness جَدَّةٍfreshness
وَالمَرءُand a man قَدmay يَبلىgrow worn مَعَwith الأَيّامِthe days
in days when I had eloquence and tender freshness;
and a man may grow worn with passing days.
