لَهفيmy lament عَلىfor وُرقِleaves الشَبابyouth
وَغُصونِهِand its branches الخُضرِgreen الرِطابtender
Alas for the leaves of youth,
My longing for the leaves of youth,
And its green, tender branches.
And its moist, green branches,
ذَهَبَhas gone الشَبابُyouth وَبانَand parted عَنـfrom
ـنيme غَيرَnot مُنتَظَرِexpected الإِيابreturn
Youth has gone and parted from
Youth has gone, and departed from me,
Me, with no return expected.
Not to return unexpectedly.
فَلَأَبكِيَنَّso I shall surely weep عَلىfor الشَباyouth (continued)
بِcompletion of 'youth' وَطيبِand the sweetness of أَيّامِdays of التَصابyouthful play
So I shall surely weep for youth
I will cry for youth,
And the sweetness of days of youthful play.
And the goodness of days past,
وَلَأَبكِيَنَّand I shall surely weep مِنَover البِلىdecay
وَلَأَبكِيَنَّand I shall surely weep مِنَover الخِضابhair dye
And I shall surely weep over decay,
I will cry from old age,
And I shall surely weep over hair dye.
And from the dyeing (of hair).

Indeed, I do hope to be spared,
I do hope to meet (my end)
While death is in pursuit.
While death seeks me out.
