    Alas for that brief time

    between al-Khawarnaq and al-Sadir,

    when we were in the chambers of the gardens,

    swimming in a sea of joy,

    نَ الدَهرِ أَمثالِ الصُقورِ

    among young men who held the reins

    of Time, like falcons;

    not one among them but was bold

    in desire, no abstainer from women.

    They pass round wine,

    tawny, milked from the pressed juice,

    a virgin, nurtured by the rays

    of the sun in the heat of noon.

    It was never brought near fire, nor

    did the grime of cooking pots cling to it.

    And one clad in a tunic walks before

    the company, like a guileless fawn,

    with a bottle that draws out the

    buried secret from the inmost heart,

    radiant, like a pearly star,

    in the cupbearer's palm.

    It leaves the noble man unable

    to tell front from back.

    And slender-waisted women visited us

    after all grew still, from their secluded chambers:

    بَسنَ الخَواتِمَ في الخُصورِ

    their haunches full, they wear

    rings around their waists;

    تٍ قاصِراتِ الطَرفِ حورِ

    bright of face and veiled,

    modest of gaze, with eyes of vivid black and white;

    مِ مُضَمَّخاتٍ بِالعَبيرِ

    reveling in luxury,

    lavishly scented with perfume;

    they sweep along in robes of beauty,

    and saffron-dyed garments and silk.

    They never see the sun except

    on rare occasions, through gaps in the curtains.

    بُنا مِنَ الدَهرِ العَثورِ

    And to God's trusted one we flee

    from ever-stumbling Time;

    and toward him we wearied our mounts

    with evening travel and journeys at dawn:

    their cheeks turned aside, as though

    they had been given eagles' wings,

    robed in darkness,

    over smooth ground and rugged terrain,

    until they brought us to

    the lord of cities and palaces.

    He was ever, even before his weaning,

    of a mature elder's years.
