ياO وَيحَalas for نَفسيmy soul لَوَif only أَنَّهُthat he أَقصَرhe desisted
ماnot كانَwas عَيشيmy life كَماas أَرىI see أَكدَرmore troubled
Alas for my soul! If only he would desist,
My life would not be so troubled as I find it.
ياO مَنwho عَذيريmy defender مِمَّنagainst the one whom كَلِفتُI became enamored بِهِof him
يَشهَدُbears witness قَلبيmy heart بِأَنَّهُto the fact that he يَسحَرhe bewitches
Oh, who will defend me against the one I adore?
My heart bears witness that he casts spells.
ياOh رُبَّmany a يَومٍday رَأَيتَنيyou saw me مَرِحاًmerry
أَخوصُI wade فيin اللَهوِrevelry مُسبِلَletting trail المِئزَرthe waistcloth
Oh, many a day you saw me merry,
Wading in revelry, letting my waistcloth trail,
بَينَamong نَدامىdrinking companions تَحُثُّurges along كَأسَهُمُtheir cup
عَلَيهِمُto them كَفُّhand شادِنٍa young gazelle أَحوَرwith dark irises and bright whites
Among drinking companions, whose cup was passed swiftly
To them by the hand of a dark-eyed young gazelle.
