A gazelle is now in Baghdad; I never recall him

Without weeping whenever his memory comes to mind.

Indeed, when a lover’s dwellings lie far

From the beloved, he weeps, or yearns, or remembers.

Oh, many a long night I spent watching it,

Until the pillar of dawn shone and burst forth.

I never thought, until I knew you,

That beds were among the things that grow needles.

And night is longer than the Day of Reckoning to

The eye of the sorrow-stricken, when his sleep takes flight.
