وكانت بك الأحوالُ تحكي جهنما

You once, in your scowling, resembled Mālik,

Indeed, in your scowling you resembled Malik,

and the circumstances surrounding you evoked Hell.

and because of you, circumstances resembled Hell.

فما أعظم البُشرى بعودك خامِلاً

وغيرُكَ قد أضحى النبيهَ المقدَّما

How great the glad tidings of your return to obscurity,

So how great the glad tidings of your return to obscurity,

now that another has become the distinguished man set foremost.

while someone else has become distinguished and favored.
