O my lord, word of a poet’s eminence has reached you,

whose excellence the poets have attested.

Had he lived in al-Nuʿman’s days,

al-Nuʿman would have found him superior to al-Dhubyani.

Or had he spent a day among Banu Hamdan, not

in their Ahmad would Banu Hamdan have rejoiced.

But a misfortune has indeed overtaken him,

a literary one that mingled him with the slaves.

So he became the plaything of every man slapped on the nape,

empty-handed, with his sleeves in tatters.

And when you look at his nape, you would think

the anemones of al-Nuʿman had sprouted upon it.
