Come, set down sorrow's baggage in my courtyard,

because south and north winds wove over them.

    #

and against a hater who blows upon the knot of patience?

    #

over my breast, until my tears soaked my sword-belt.

    #

Arrows of grief, here is my heart—pierce it.

    After Husayn, take delight in my pain;

    and the withholder of those tears fulfilled his pledge and made good;

At al-Taff was a day that enraged the Message.

    #

so draw my garments from yours, and they will slip free.

    #

to obtain deliverance with the son of Harb.

As though the radiance of Husayn's head upon the staff

    #

were the evening beacon of a devout monk.

    #

    #

a counselor never stinting in his rebukes.

    #

To God I appeal against a slave who attacked a master

and left him rolled in earth beneath the battle-dust,

calling to the Messenger of God in the straits of battle:

'Protect me from an aggressor who, in his violence, has tyrannized

    #

over me, to try me with every kind of anguish.'

    #

    #

'O long night, come, clear away!'

    #

O camel-driver of the Chosen One, my endurance is torn apart

by the aggression of a people whose perversity spreads.

How can they feel tenderness today, or how can they feel pity—

the hearts of enemies that flee the place of admonition,

    #

like a rock-boulder swept down by the torrent from on high?

    #

O people of tyranny, you have no feeling!

Why build the house if its foundation has been demolished?

Do you hope for dawn when the sun has set,

and that abomination has made you slip from your religion,

    #

as smooth rock makes one descending slip?

    #

then, as wrongdoers, you gave him his entrails' blood to drink.

How much rancor spread within your breasts!

So you urged on the keen sword, a speckled serpent,

    #

against the neck of one noble in paternal and maternal kin among his clan.

    #

a moth of evil shook the bond of reason.

    ترى الدمَ في تلكَ الذوائِبِ مُشبِها

    Husayn's hair became coated with lifeblood;

you see the blood in those locks resembling

    #

henna's extract on combed gray hair.

    #

my tears water my breast's heat, but it is never quenched,

and the people of wickedness settle in the dwellings of piety,

    #

as the laden Yemeni with his baggage chests settles.

    #

So through it I sought a heart that had fled patience,

bearing of anguish's torment all that it bore.

No champion grants redress against Karbala's injustice.

Yet I have tears which, when they stream,

    #

knock great kanahbal trees down upon their chins.

    #

For a calamity such as you, I defied my consolation

and handed sorrows the reins of my weeping.

    #

and bring down the white-footed ibex from every perch.

    #

I shall profess for all time love of Ali's sons,

    and recite their elegies at every gathering;

perhaps their grandfather, on the Day of Recompense, will extend to me

the benefactor's palm, forgiving my sins,

    #

so I may gain mercy from the Most High King.

    #

O hearers of this elegy [opening text unclear], have mercy

upon a transgressor whose wrongdoing has long endured,

whose striving lags behind, though his love is foremost.

Perhaps the honored Prophet will receive him

    #

with a countenance that raises him toward every hope.

    #
