There, a splendid bahār flower
In them is a splendid oxeye daisy,
appeared and adorned the earth.
which has appeared and adorned its land.
كأنّهas though it were جِيدُa neck تِبرٍunworked gold
كأنّه جِيدُ تِبرٍ
يلوحshines فيin طوقِa collar of فضهsilver
يلوح في طوقِ فضه
It is like a neck of gold
As though it were a neck of gold,
gleaming within a collar of silver.

ونرجسٌand a narcissus مثلlike لونthe color of المهجورthe forsaken lover
ونرجسٌ مثل لون المهجور
فارقَparted with غمضَهhis sleep
فارقَ غمضَه
And narcissus, pale as the forsaken lover

who has parted with sleep;
who has lost his sleep.
واقحوانٌand a chrysanthemum أَنيقٌelegant
واقحوانٌ أَنيقٌ
برودُهُits robes مُبيَضّهwhitened
برودُهُ مُبيَضّه
and elegant daisies,
And an elegant chrysanthemum,
their robes gleaming white.

قدalready طرَّزَتهاhas embroidered them بتبرٍwith unworked gold
قد طرَّزَتها بتبرٍ
عينُthe eye of الندىdew المرفَضَّهstreaming
عينُ الندى المرفَضَّه
It embroidered them with gold—
embroidered with gold
the overflowing eye of dew.

وباقلاّءٌand the broad bean قدalready أبدىhas revealed
وباقلاّءٌ قد أبدى
بنَورهthrough its bloom الحسنَbeauty مَحضَهits pure essence
بنَوره الحسنَ مَحضَه
And the broad bean has revealed
And the broad bean has revealed,
in its blossom beauty in its purest form.
through its bloom, beauty’s pure essence.
كأنماas though النّهرthe river أُفقthe horizon of
كأنما النّهر أُفق
السماءthe sky عانقَembraced أَرضَهits earth
السماء عانقَ أَرضَه
The river seems a horizon
As though the river were the horizon
of heaven embracing its earth.

وقدand already كساhas clothed عُدوَتيهِits two banks
وقد كسا عُدوَتيهِ
منwith الأزاهرthe blossoms مَخضَهits churned cream

with the churned cream of blossoms,
كماjust as ابنson of عبّادنʿAbbād (name) النّدthe nobleman (first part)

بُ قد كسا الصون عرضه
just as Ibn ʿAbbād, the no—

—ble hero, has clothed his honor in protection:
man, has clothed his honor in protection.
سَمحٌgenerous علىtoward المالwealth فظٌّharsh
سَمحٌ على المال فظٌّ
دأباًunceasingly يجدّدrenews فَضَّهits dispersal
دأباً يجدّد فَضَّه
generous, treating wealth roughly,
Generous, yet harsh toward wealth,
forever dispersing it anew.
unceasingly scattering it anew.
لهhe has منof الجاهِhigh standing حظٌّa share
له من الجاهِ حظٌّ
علىwhile maintaining التواضُعhumility عَضَّهhe held it fast
على التواضُع عَضَّه
He possesses a share of high standing,
He has a share of high standing,
though humility has bitten into it.
which he holds fast to while remaining humble.
