وَتَرنو بِطَرفٍ أَوطفٍ وَهوَ ناعِسُ
She came swaying like a bough, though the bough is dry.
She came swaying like a bough, while the bough was withered,
And gazes with a long-lashed eye, heavy with drowsiness.
And glanced with a tender, amorous glance, though lulled in sleep.

Full-hipped, she shames the bān tree's shoot in grace,
A sand-hill spotted with lines of trees, graceful in motion,
And mocks the Khattī spear when set beside it.
Mocking the firm rock when she makes comparison.

One of the modest-eyed, slender of belly,
Of the short-statured fair, with languishing, wounded passion,
Delicate in the fold of her flank, slim-waisted and companionable.
Delicate, soft as the tear-drop, gentle and friendly.

Her radiance outshines the full moon on the night of its fullness,
Her teeth surpassed the full moon on the night it is brightest,
And it retreats to the low edge of its horizon, head bowed.
And lodged in a dimple, as the new moon lies.

Whenever she gazes toward a self-possessed man, he is stirred
When she glanced towards the mild one, he was inflamed with yearning,
By passion, and whispering fancies draw him away.
And consumed by suspicions, apprehensions and doubts.

She came to my home, swaying proudly, while the night was pitch-dark,
She came to my abode, swaying while night was at its darkest,
As a beloved companion visited me late at night.
As a loved one had come, to give comfort and cheer.

For no garden, crowned with blossoms by the dew
Not as flowers garlanded the meadow, moist with night's drippings,
As brides are crowned with their diadems—
As her necklaces garlanded her, like brides at their wedding.

Rain wept over it until its blossoms laughed,
The thread of life made it laugh, till its light was reflected,
And gushing clouds opened their spouts over it;
While lonely it had been, with thoughts to distract and confuse.

The hand of the rain-stars clothed it in brocade, as though
The hands of the winds clothed it in something like paintings,
Persia had graced it with all kinds of painted designs;
Embroidered by a skilled horseman wielding his sword.

So after the rain it stood proud before a paradise,
Till when day dawned, the foreign land was adorned as a garden,
Whose ripe fruit no hand had clasped;
Whose keeper no visitor has greeted or met.

There the flowers' bloom gleams within the calyxes,
The flowers on his sleeves shine out with his brightness,
Like bright stars guarded by the Milky Way's sword;
As flowers with the sword of the galaxy guarding its bloom.

The tale-bearing breeze circles it, and so bend
The gentle breeze sports with it, and the tender boughs sway
The slender boughs upon its knolls, swaying proudly;
Of the guardian tree, gentle themselves, offering hospitality.

And the grove's orator rose there in song,
The singer of the orchard arose, warbling gaily,
Upon him a yellow-dyed shirt, woven by the dew;
On him a shirt the rising sun had woven and wrought.

Gray doves answer him with Maʿbad's melodies,
The leaves respond to him with the tunes of the lute,
And sing upon the boughs in easy companionship;
Cheering him on as friends, singing harmoniously.

They remind me of the days of youthful dalliance, and I turn away
It reminds me of days of horsing around, so I swayed
With anxious whisperings in my heart from overwhelming grief—
With a heart full to bursting with cares and misgivings.

Is lovelier in splendor than she, when she approached,
With beauty better than this when first she appeared,
And greeted me as gazelles greet from their thickets.
Greeting me as gazelles greet their fair companions.

Who was it clad the youth in his coat of many virtues,
Whose roots have raised him toward lofty attainments?
Rousing him on towards lofty and noble ideas?

He climbed the loftiest peak among the heights of letters;
He climbed the loftiest heights of civility and breeding,
Who, then, can rival him, and who can match him?
Who could equal him? Who could claim to be his peer?

O son of great houses, exalt then with pride in their glory,
And who vie in nothing but glory—
For they have no part in any glory but yours.

I sent verse, ordered like the nights;
I sent a string of verse like threaded nights, relating
It mirrored the pearls of my tears when my companion departed.
The pearls of my tears when the sessions came to an end.

You taxed me to reply, and wished me well in so doing,
A request! Yet how could I be its equal?
A question desired, but where could equivalence be found?

Flower-brides that the pitch-dark nights had unveiled.
Of brides of flowers whose bloom the cranes have despoiled.

If in this can be found anything pleasing to behold,
Then I have borrowed its spark from the light of your description.
Then I take my share of light from your noble qualities.

And take her: she walks softly and bends
Beyond this, my message walks in shyness, glancing
In shyness, while the eye steals glances at her,
Sideways in modesty, while eyes dart longingly.

At your door she hopes for acceptance and favor,
May she win nearness to you and find companionship.
That she may find intimacy and friendship with you.

You still endow a companion with the finest manners,
For all time, as long as schools resound with learning,
As long as schools have taught any art or knowledge.

And as long as the gardens' turtledove mourns in song,
No starling sings melodiously in the gardens, and no lover
And the yearning one pines, far from home and hopeless.
Sighs, departing in sorrow, hopeless and full of despair.
