    مَن حُكمهُ في القَضايا تابع القَدرِ

    Rum’s great scholar, judge of the two armies there,

    Whose judgment in legal cases follows fate;

    Abd al-Halim Akhizade—recited are

    His virtues among us, like Quranic verses and surahs.

    Muhammad by name, blessed in disposition; in

    The lineaments of his face is the moon’s countenance.

    وَسطَ البَياض سَوادَ العَينِ وَالبَصَرِ

    God be praised—what passages on the page! You would deem them

    Amid the whiteness, the eye’s dark pupil and sight itself;

    Or like gardens that clouds, passing by night, have clothed

    In cloaks of brocade or embroidered striped cloth.

    Like stars at night that have risen above

    The Milky Way’s river, or like a garden in bloom.

    Orion longs to loosen, out of passion

    For them, her girdle, even if she should face peril.

    As though, upon it, pearls from fair women’s rubies

    Had been inlaid along the margins, in the fingernail’s place.
