    I mourn to You all the heart’s intimations;

Nothing remains of them but an effaced trace.

I mourn to You hearts from which, time and again,

Clouds of bounty rained down oceans of wisdom.

I mourn to You souls whose witnessing was swept away

Beyond all where-ness—nay, into the vision of pre-eternity.

I mourn to You the tongue of Truth, which long ago

Perished; even its memory is as nothing in the mind.

I mourn to You an eloquence before which submit

The ears of every eloquent, articulate, discerning soul.

    I mourn—by Your truth—the virtues of a fellowship:

They were their steeds, issuing from the hidden depths of restraint.

All have passed away, leaving neither sight nor trace—

As ʿĀd passed away and the people of Iram were lost.
