    We kept vigil in remembrance of the beloved ones, O Hind.

    Yet the meaning was not unveiled, nor the promise fulfilled.

    We count the stars of night from the excess of our longing,

    and night, longing, and counting toy with us.

    فيعجب اذ نبكي ونعجب اذ يحدو

    And we weep when the camel-driver chants their attributes;

    so he marvels when we weep, and we marvel when he chants.

    And yearnings seize us from every side,

    so our strength is no strength, nor our effort any effort.

    May the breaths of the unseen grant us reunion,

    and may the carpet of nearness fold away what distance has stretched out.

    متى بصنيع الوصل يندفع الصد

    Our beloved ones, the nights of your turning away have grown long;

    when will the kindness of reunion drive rejection away?

    Our souls circle around you at every moment,

    and longing pulls at them from every side.

    Our hearts turn you over within their secret depths,

    and truthfulness, love, and affection are imprinted in them.

    If they pause from longing's throbbing for an instant,

    they nearly fall and apostatize under love's law.

    By the subtle grace of your meanings and the hours of your nearness,

    and cups of union whose delight surpasses honey,

    وفي سوحها الممدوح جوهركم فرد

    our innermost selves—you are the thread uniting their varied forms;

    and in their courts your praised essence stands alone.

    وغبنا فلا قبل سواكم ولا بعد

    We complained, and our complaint in love made us weep;

    and we vanished—there was none but you, before or after.

    And through you we found delight; you are all, and no one

    but you could take or give back within the secret heart.

    When will slumbering fortune grant us reunion with you,

    and what we desire come to pass, and fortune awaken?

    By the sanctity of love, since the day your forms vanished,

    our lowlands are no lowlands, nor our highlands highlands.

    The deaf rock feels tenderness for us out of compassion,

    and the free man and the slave regard us with tenderness.

    For God's sake, restore to us your customary kindness,

    and be gentle with tears whose torrent has cleft the cheek.

    And bestow faithfulness upon us after your abandonment,

    for, by God, we have no aim but you.

    We enfolded a fire for your sake in the core of the secret heart,

    before which, O our people, hard stone melts.

    Rescue us in tenderness, O generous ones, with mercy,

    and from us to you, throughout time, are gratitude and praise.
