    My two friends, why do I not see the heart in its place?

    It has scattered; is there counsel I may receive to gather it?

    I implore you both: be gentle with one worn and bewildered by love,

    A man of deep passion, whose heart is not with him.

    He yearns in anguish for the beloved's precincts,

    And green abodes, flourishing with beauty.

    By God, how often he offered their hills his moaning,

    And poured out his tears for them from the depths of his eyes.

    May the downpouring cloud water gardens there,

    Whose blossoms shine, veiled in pearls.

    Gardens around which this soul smiles,

    And finds rest in those jewel-studded meadows.

    اغثني بصوت القرب منك لاسمعه

    O my beloved, by the love of old, have mercy;

    Come to my aid with the voice of nearness to you, that I may hear it.

    For I have an eye that weeping over separation has wounded,

    And a grieving heart, pained by separation's rending force.

    فرفقا باجزاء الفؤاد المولعه

    My heart melts in burning longing to meet you;

    So be gentle with the heart's love-stricken fragments.

    ارى مهجتي منها لدارك مزمعه

    And impulses draw me out of myself toward you;

    I see my soul, moved by them, resolved to reach your abode.

    I try to keep it from departing; it says to me:

    "If I do not behold the gazelle, I shall behold its grazing ground."

    متى فجرك الوضاح ابصر مطلعه

    You have indeed withdrawn, O light of eyes, veiling yourself;

    When shall I behold the rising of your radiant dawn?

    And once you unveil yourself, my eyes behold

    Four qualities at your exalted rising:

    Splendor, grace, and beauty, along

    Whose fringes brown lances are leveled in majesty.

    So I behold your eye with my own, while love

    Lodges you in my soul, amid spaciousness and ease.
