My heart was harsh, and sin's compulsion irksome

And my hopes have flowed toward mending my condition.

Yet I had hopes my state could still be mended

ما كنت اعلم ان القلب من حجر

حتى تدلى لعيني منه سلسال

I did not know that the heart was made of stone

I did not know this heart was made of stone

Until a clear stream descended from it to my eye.

Until therefrom a chain before mine eyes descended
