    Mine is a gazelle in the wilds of al-Raqmatayn.

    For his sake, the reproachers assailed me.

    And I was consumed as fire blazed within my ribs,

    And the eye's streaming tears gush forth.

    يا ما يسل من البعاد نصال

    And separation tore my heart with its blades;

    Oh, how many blades are unsheathed by separation!

    And harsher than this, and heavier in its tread,

    Is a heart with which hopes toy.

    It imagined a meeting and began to await its time,

    Distraught with love, while impossibility mingles with its suppositions.

    O gazelle of the valley of al-Raqmatayn, you have indeed

    Been clothed in majesty by beauty's delicate grace.

    قد اقعدته من النوى الاثقال

    Be gentle with one whose heart is scorched, distraught with love;

    The burdens of separation have laid him low.

    With insistent yearning for you, he was shaken from

    Within his limbs by their changing phases and states.

    Whenever you are mentioned, it is as though the earth of his heart

    Is shaken throughout by an earthquake of longing.

    ولأهلها قد تندب الاطلال

    He weeps over the ruins for your face's sake, enamored;

    And ruins are indeed mourned for those who dwelt there.

    And many a flash of lightning at al-Ghuwayr has stirred me

    To yearn for the people of the sanctuary; each state has its own state:

    Relentless longing, and a sigh that never dies out,

    And passionate love that has become proverbial.

    Not a limb of mine remains that is not steeped in

    Yearning for you, whose arrows pierce.

    You tried to outwit me and schemed; your plan was to cut me off.

    And the schemer may indeed go astray through his own judgment.

    او ليس هذي الحادثات ظلال

    Take whichever of your suppositions you please, and pass judgment;

    And are these happenings not shadows?
