So do not sit heedless, clinging to idleness,
Do not sit idly in laziness, unaware
Nor ever wish to be incapable of striving.
And do not desire helplessness, ever seeking sustenance

Have you not seen that God said to Mary,
Have you not seen that Allah said to Mary
As the sacred Pen wrote upon its tablet,
As the holy pen wrote on its tablet

وهزيand shake اليكtoward yourself الجذعthe trunk يساقطit will shed الرطبripe dates
When she withdrew alone for God in the shade of a palm tree:
Since you secluded yourself for Allah in the shade of a palm tree
"And shake the trunk toward yourself; it will shed ripe dates."
And shook the trunk so that the ripe dates would fall
ولوand if شاءHe willed انthat تجنيهshe gather them منfrom غيرother than هزهاshaking it
ومنand from غيرother than اعمالemploying الوسائلthe means والتعبand toil
And had He willed that she gather them without shaking it,
Had He willed that you harvest it without shaking
And without employing means or toil,
And without applying means and effort

جنتهshe gathered them ولكنand yet كلevery شيءthing لهit has سببa cause
The trunk would have bent toward her, so that in her lap
He would have inclined the trunk to you with its fruit
She could gather them—but everything has a cause.
So you could harvest it, but everything has a cause
