I wept at the memory of loved ones, while separation

is dreadful, and remembrance indeed sets the heart aflame.

وقد كان لي في ايمن الحي وقفة

اسامر فيها الحي تشبعني سكرا

اسامر فيها الحي تشبعني سكرا

And once I had a moment on the right side of the encampment,

conversing there by night with the tribe; it filled me with intoxication.

اعلل قلبي ريضا بخيالها

اعلل قلبي ريضا بخيالها

فتطربني قلبا وتسكرني فكرا

فتطربني قلبا وتسكرني فكرا

I soothe my untamed heart with its image,

and so it enraptures my heart and intoxicates my mind.

مضت وانقضت لا الربع زاه ولا الحمى

مضت وانقضت لا الربع زاه ولا الحمى

خصيب ولا تلك التلال بدت خضرا

خصيب ولا تلك التلال بدت خضرا

It passed and ended; the campsite no longer flourishes, nor is the protected pasture

fertile, nor have those hills appeared green.

الا فابعثي يا عين دمعا مسلسلا

الا فابعثي يا عين دمعا مسلسلا

عسى سيل دمعي يبرد الكبد الحرا

عسى سيل دمعي يبرد الكبد الحرا

Ah, send forth, O eye, an unbroken stream of tears;

may the flood of my tears cool my burning liver.
