I marveled at one so rash, so mean, so vile,

And so foul in character, denying kindness and generosity.

He sees love as hatred and faithfulness as a fault,

And the truest of God's creatures as among the vilest foes.

For his own ends he is pleased and grows angry, unaware

Of his two states, forever beguiled by fancy.

So leave him; this man is impossible to reform.

And all favors are wasted on those like him.

The days will guide him aright, in spite of himself,

And reform him—and God is the adversary of whoever transgresses.
