I have been bewildered ever since your lovely dark eyes fluttered.

O you whose radiance shames the moon's splendor!

I come alive when my eye beholds you smiling,

And I may die when you vanish from my sight.

O gazelle, may no disturbance startle you.

Why this shying away? Are you not counted among humankind?

Oh, how sweet were those brief moments we once shared,

While time was serene, without worry or distress,

Our company united, and separation itself cut off,

And our gathering in union safe from fortune's changes.

By the magic of your eyes, I never delighted in a lightning flash

Without your mouth's lightning drawing my gaze.

And never did a branch sway in a fragrant breeze

Without your waist revealing its sway in my thoughts.

Ah, may God water the sanctuary's ruins, arrayed

Near you in that fragrant gathering place.

And over the garden the dew streamed, pouring down,

Just as my eyes streamed with rain at parting.

And roses breathed fragrance, and the plains were laughing,

And a mantle of blossoms was buttoned over the hillside.

Nearness has been changed to distance, and union to separation.

I believe in God—die, O denier of fate!
