I drew you, O my beloved, in my imagination.

And none but you was drawn on the tablet of my mind.

I made you my qibla, my soul's prayer niche,

in my heart, in the noonday heat and in the shade.

I yearn for nights when I used to be found

    there—oh, how sweet those nights!

By your worth, my longing for you is indeed unchanged,

and my state, in loving you, remains as it was.

And the reproachers said, “Forget him.”

Yet my heart has not forgotten for even a moment.

I wrote to you an account of my state, in anguished longing,

with tears that streamed from me like pearls.

    وهذا دين سادات الرجال

    And I have laid my case before none but God;

and this is the faith of the masters among men.
