يثور بنار الغرام لارض مي

ويا لله كم فعل الغرام

He is stirred by passion’s fire for the land of Mayy.

And, O God, how much passion has wrought!

رويدك راكب الوجناء مهلا

فقد لاحت لناظرها الخيام

Take your time, rider of the sturdy she-camel; go slowly.

For the tents have now come into view.

اما والخيل تنهزها رجال

اولوا شمم جحاجحة كرام

Indeed, by the horses urged onward by men,

Proud-spirited, mighty and noble chiefs,

وميدان الوغا يبدي عجاجا

تقول الليل غلغله الظلام

And by the battlefield, displaying clouds of dust,

You would say it was night, pervaded by darkness—

فؤادي لا يهيم لغير قوم

يلذ له بذكرهم الهيام

My heart is enraptured by none but a people

In whose remembrance its rapture grows sweet.

هم المقصود ان منحوا ومنوا

على الدنيا ومن فيها السلام

They are my aim; if they bestow gifts and favors,

Farewell to the world and everyone in it.
