By your eyes, O gazelle, how long

will you torment with estrangement one who cannot endure?

    سقيم باذيال التلهف يعثر

    You played coy until he was humbled, his body wasted;

sick, he stumbles over the trailing hems of yearning.

And a bygone time, O Saʿd, when my little gazelle was

my companion then, and the moonlit night shone—

I wept for it when I remembered; and passion

wrestles with love's weary sufferer whenever he remembers.

    O my soul's desire, love's covenant

is ancient, and the creed of affection never changes.

    Be gentle with my plight, for my heart is distraught with love;

within it fire blazes on every side.

And an eye pouring forth clouds, unsettled by weeping,

flows and drips in sorrow and in joy.

Whenever it sees the plains of Salʿ and Hajir,

an autumn raincloud comes pouring down from it.

In those regions, the love-distraught one has a heart,

captive to longing, breaking apart through separation.

Upon it lies a radiance from the talisman-sealed secret,

revealing matters to passion, which stands bewildered.

So, amid love's smooth and rugged terrain, I could not tell

whether my time was night or radiant noon.

And my full moon—how delicate his contours have grown! Yet estrangement,

with its cruelty, folds and unfolds my heart.

My form, O Umaym, was once recognizable,

and behold, the gazelle's ravages have made it unrecognizable.

He shot me with an arrow from his languid eyelids,

and bloodied a heart where his essence lay hidden.

Were he not in my heart, I would say: Shoot, and command

as you wish; show no mercy, for the choice is yours.

I donned the armor of beautiful patience, yet passion has

swords unsheathed against my vanished patience.

So if I say, 'I will not weep,' my tears are poured forth

by a passion I have no power to conceal.

    And if I say, 'I will weep,' my reproacher utters lies;

yet if he kept company with fairness, the love-stricken would be excused.

Peace upon my full moon and the days of his nearness,

for, in longing for them, I pass into absence and return.
