    Ask the redness of the cheeks about the ardent lover's heart.

    Otherwise, the embers will tell you of it.

    Ask the waist one day about your lover's wasting,

    and the pearls of your front teeth about the streaming tears.

    And do not discount the eyes' glance, for it

    has a touch—yes, by love!—the touch of a keen blade.

    So do not marvel if I call it a blade; its touch

    is surely a sword to my heart and sorcery to my mind.

    اهيم لكم لا للاعاجم والعرب

    And you left me behind, tormented in love;

    I am mad with love for you, not for non-Arabs or Arabs.

    ولا شيء احلى من عذابكم العذب

    And a wonder it is: my torment for you is sweet to me;

    and nothing is sweeter than your sweet torment.

    I reproach my soul for loving you, though it

    is love-distraught in separation and nearness alike.

    And how could it yield to reproach, when its nature

    in loving you is the furthest thing from reproach?

    And I ask my heart, “What sin have you committed,

    casting me from estrangement's hollow into a well,

    making me languish and bewildering my thoughts?”

    But my heart confessed to nothing but love.

    If, then, my sin in your eyes is love's intensity,

    and that, for you, I am at war with sleep by night,

    and that I see you in pure water,

    I beseech you, by God: do not forgive my sin.

    For, by God, I do not know: should I blame my soul

    for bringing about my dispossession in its love for you?

    Should I reproach it, O you I cherish, in your view,

    for love—or my wounded eye, or my heart?

    وكم نظرة ساقت الى الموطن الصعب

    For if I blame my heart, it tells me, “The eye saw;

    and many a glance has led to a perilous place!

    It was drawn in when it saw love's visitor.”

    And if I blame my eye, it says, “The fault is the heart's.”

    فخصمي خصيمي آه والداء في الطب

    So my heart and eye have shared in shedding my blood;

    so my foe is my opponent—ah, and the malady lies in the remedy!

    فيا رب كن عونا على العين والقلب

    I turn between eye and heart, complaining;

    so, Lord, be my aid against eye and heart.

    And, Lord, do not deprive a lover of his beloved,

    for the beloved's departure is among the gravest calamities.

    Nor afflict the love-worn with a beloved who stays aloof.

    And, Lord, do not condemn people to love.
