أفارق بغداد لا عن قلى

وأسري الى البين لا عن قرم

I leave Baghdad, not out of hatred,

I leave Baghdad, not because I dislike it,

and journey by night toward parting, not out of longing.

And head for separation, not because of resentment.

أروح وأغدو ولي قائدا

ن عز الإباء وذل العدم

I go at evening and at dawn, with two guides:

I come and go while my guide is

the dignity of proud refusal and the humiliation of poverty.

The glory of magnanimity and the disgrace of annihilation.

وأرجو فتى مكرماً للندى

وأرجو فتى مكرماً للندى

كما رجت الارض صوب الديم

كما رجت الارض صوب الديم

And I hope for a young man who honors generosity,

And I hope for a generous youth for generosity

as the earth has hoped for steady rains to fall.

As the land hopes for the rain.
