وأعرضت إذا رأت في عارضي درراً

And she turned away when she saw pearls in my beard,

When she saw gems in my cheeks,

Strung together, with sorrows strung alongside them.

She strung sorrows with them in verse.

وللصبابة قوم لا يسرهم

وللصبابة قوم لا يسرهم

أن يلبسوا الوشي إلا تحته سقم

أن يلبسوا الوشي إلا تحته سقم

And longing has devotees who take no joy

The youth have folk who don't rejoice

In wearing brocade unless sickness lies beneath it.

In wearing fine clothes, unless in illness.

أشتاق أهلي لظبي بين أرحلهم

أشتاق أهلي لظبي بين أرحلهم

والحب يوصل إذ لا توصل الرحم

والحب يوصل إذ لا توصل الرحم

I yearn for my kin because of a gazelle among their dwellings,

My family yearns for me, a gazelle between flocks,

And love unites when kinship does not.

Love connects when kinship fails to connect.
