1. تَرْكُك لِجِسْمِك

    وكَشْفُ الْغُطَيْ

    Your forsaking of your body

    and the lifting of the covering—

  2. فافْنَى ودَعْ حُبُّو

    وتَبْقَى حَيْ

    so vanish, and abandon love of it,

    and remain alive.

  3. يُشْغِلَك عَن ذاتَك

    وتَنْحَجَبْ

    It distracts you from your essence,

    and you become veiled,

  4. وَيجْعَلْ أوْقاتَكْ

    كُلَّهَا شَغَب

    and makes your hours

    all turmoil.

  5. فاصْقُل لمرآتَك

    ترَى عَجب

    So polish your mirror;

    you will see wonders.

  6. يُريك أيْش ما ثَمْ

    صَقْلُ الْمُرَي

    It shows you whatever is there—

    the polishing of the mirror.

  7. مَنْ في القُبَا يَرجع

    صَحْبَ الخَبَي

    Whoever is in the robe becomes

    a companion of the tent.

  8. خُودِ الوجودْ كُلاَّ

    يا ذَا الخليع

    Take all existence,

    O you unfettered one;

  9. عُلْواً مع سفلاَ

    رُدُّوا جميع

    the high together with the low—

    bring it all back.

  10. واجعل مِنَ الْجُمْلا

    عرشاً رفيع

    And make from the whole

    a lofty throne,

  11. مَرْكَب في بَحْرِ اسْمَا

    ما فِيهِ شيْ

    a vessel in a sea of names;

    there is nothing in it.

  12. على الْمُحَرَّك لُوا

    دُرْ يا أُخَيْ

    Toward the one who moves it,

    turn, my little brother.

  13. إِنْ كُنْتَ مِمَّن قال

    تَمَّ الْوَسَط

    If you are among those who say,

    “There is an intermediary,”

  14. قُلوا مالُوا إٍسْتِقلال

    خَلِّ الْغَلط

    tell him, “It has no independence.”

    Give up the error.

  15. واحِد هُوَ الفعَّال

    في الْحَضْر قط

    One is the doer,

    in the Presence, and no other.

  16. فازهَد في ذي الأغيار

    واطْوِيها طَيْ

    So renounce these others,

    and fold them utterly away.

  17. وأنْتَ في الْجُمْلَهْ

    تَكُنْ فُتَى

    And you, within the whole,

    will be a noble youth.

  18. مَنْ ذَا الذي يَزْهد

    إِذَا فَنِيت

    Who is it that renounces

    when you have vanished?

  19. ومَن بقَى يَشْهد

    كَيْتاً وكَيْتْ

    And who remains to witness

    such and such?

  20. وُجُودُوا ليْس يُجْحَد

    كَما رأيْت

    His existence is not denied,

    as you have seen.

  21. والرائي هُ المرئي

    وَتَمْ شُوَيْ

    And the seer is the seen,

    and there is a little something—

  22. سرَاب هُوَ يا عطشان

    يظْهَر مُرَيْ

    it is a mirage, O thirsty one,

    coming into view.

  23. رُدّ الوجُود واحد

    وأنْتَ ذَاك

    Bring existence back to one,

    and you are that one.

  24. وليْسَ عليك زَايد

    وما ثَمْ سِواك

    And there is nothing beyond you,

    and nothing there but you.

  25. كُن للسُّوي جاحِد

    مَهْمي أتاك

    Be a denier of all else,

    whatever comes to you.

  26. وَهمك هُ يَطَّوَّر

    ما تَحْتَ شَيْ

    Your imagination is what changes form;

    there is nothing underneath.

  27. حِجاب هُ قُم مَزِّق

    عَنْكَ الطُّلَيْ

    It is a veil: rise and tear off

    the coating from yourself.

  28. فَنَّشْتُ مَن يَفْنَى

    وايْش هُ الفَنَا

    I searched for the one who vanishes,

    and what annihilation is;

  29. فلم أجِد معْنَى

    إِلاَّ أنا

    but I found no meaning

    except “I”.

  30. ما كُلُّ مَن غنَّى

    يُنْشِد لنا

    Not everyone who sings

    chants for us.

  31. عُرْيان نُرِيد نمشِي

    أجَلَّ شَيْ

    Naked, I want to walk—

    the noblest thing—

  32. كما مَشَى قَبْلِي

    غَيْلان مَيْ

    as before me walked
